About Glen Waverley – Suburb Profile

Development of the Glen Waverley area dates back to the 1860s; with the Glen Waverley area being predominantly used for farming, fruit growing and wood collecting. The Glen Waverley area was originally known as Black Flat and was generally based around the Waverley Road-Springvale Road intersection. The name was changed to Glen Waverley in 1905, having been derived from a privately surveyed township on the corner of High Street Road and Stephensons Road, named after Sir Walter Scott’s Waverley novels of the early 19th Century.

Despite the opening of the railway in the 1930s, suburban real estate development of the Glen Waverley area was slow until the 1960s when rapid growth took place.

Major features of Glen Waverley include The Glen Shopping Centre, Syndal and Glen Waverley railway stations, the Monash Aquatic and Recreation Centre, the Victoria Police Academy, and Waverley Municipal Public Golf Course.
